Bratislava is one of the easiest poker trips in Europe. The Slovak capital is compact, cheap by Western European standards, an hour from Vienna airport, and home to Banco Casino Bratislava, whose festivals regularly draw thousands of entries.

The casino sits right in the centre, so you can stay in the Old Town, walk to your tournament and spend breaks by the Danube. This guide covers the poker room, how to get there, where to stay and eat, and what to do between sessions.

Why Bratislava is a great poker trip

  • Big guarantees at low buy-ins. Main Events like the €150 Polish Poker Championship (€500,000 GTD) and the €170 Banco Casino Masters (€250,000 GTD) attract huge fields.
  • A walkable city. The casino, hotels, restaurants and the Old Town are all within a few minutes of each other.
  • Two airports. Fly into Bratislava or into Vienna, which has far more routes and is about an hour away.
  • Euros everywhere. No currency exchange, and prices for food and drink are friendly.

The poker room at Banco Casino Bratislava

Banco Casino Bratislava is at Hodžovo námestie 2, directly opposite the Presidential Palace on the edge of the Old Town. It is Bratislava's main tournament venue and part of the Slovak Banco group, which also runs casinos in Košice and Piešťany.

Tournaments

Banco runs weekly tournaments and a busy festival calendar. Banco Casino Masters, its own series since 2016, has paid out more than €6,000,000 and reaches its 46th edition in December 2026. International brands come here too: the Polish Poker Championship, EVBETS Live and the Norwegian Poker Championships all play at Banco. Main Events typically have many Day 1 flights where the top 10% advance, with bonuses for qualifying more than once.

Cash games

The room spreads no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha. Smaller games have typically started around €1/€3 NLH and €2/€2 PLO, and during festivals bigger games run alongside. Stakes and opening hours change, so check with the casino before you plan a cash trip.

Player tip: Look for the bonus flights. Banco often runs a half-price Day 1, chip-leader bonuses on certain flights and cash bonuses for reaching Day 2 two or three times.

Getting to Bratislava

Bratislava sits on the Danube right next to the Austrian and Hungarian borders. Most players fly into Bratislava or Vienna.

Times are approximate. Check current timetables with the airports and rail operators before you travel.

Where to stay

Stay in or near the Old Town and you can walk to the casino. Banco is in the same building as a large international hotel, which is the most convenient option during long festival days. There are plenty of hotels, aparthotels and guesthouses within a 10 to 15-minute walk, often at lower prices than in Vienna. Book early for festival weeks and the December Christmas market season.

Food and drink

The Old Town is full of restaurants, cafés and pubs that stay open late. Try a few Slovak classics between sessions:

  • Bryndzové halušky – potato dumplings with sheep's cheese and bacon, the national dish.
  • Kapustnica – sauerkraut soup with sausage, especially popular around Christmas.
  • Lokše – thin potato pancakes, sold with sweet or savoury fillings at markets.
  • Local wine – the Small Carpathians wine region starts just outside the city.

Things to do between sessions

  • Old Town walk. Main Square, Michael's Gate and St Martin's Cathedral are all a few minutes from the casino.
  • Bratislava Castle. A short climb for views over the Danube and towards Austria.
  • Devín Castle. Ruins on a cliff where the Morava meets the Danube, about 20 minutes away.
  • Christmas markets. In late November and December the Old Town squares fill with market stalls, mulled wine and food.
  • Vienna day trip. About an hour by train if you have a rest day.

Practical tips for poker players

  • Bring ID. You need a passport or ID card to enter the casino, and you must be 18 or over.
  • Plan for re-entries. Festival events usually allow unlimited re-entry during late registration.
  • Multiple flights. Many Main Events reward qualifying more than once, so budget for extra flights if you plan to chase the bonuses.
  • Check tax rules. Tax on poker winnings depends on where you are resident; check with an adviser if you cash big.
